Having charged off the porch into the darkness, the four adventurers can make out three cottages arranged in a rough line to the south. By the time Med and Pral reach the gap between two of these, Talia is already stopped there, peering into the space beyond and trying to make sense of what she sees. While the three study the scene by the dim red glow of the Skyvein, Elendil slides up next to them, bow half drawn.

The three cottages, it turns out, are just the northern arm of a little irregular semi-circle of similar buildings arranged around a covered well at the center of a muddy little yard. Fifty feet ahead of the party, on the far side of the well, a fallen body is splayed out in a little pool of fire light shining from an open cottage door. A dark figure is crouched over it, possibly searching its pockets.

To the party’s left, also about fifty feet away, a man is edging backwards awkwardly, shouting and wildly swinging some kind of weapon at three attackers capering about him. It's hard to make things out in the poor light, but all three are very short, either children or halflings.
